Cotton Linen Wool Silk Cotton The most important natural fiber is cotton which accounts for about 50 percent of world fiber usage , although in western Europe and the USA it has been overtaken by polyester. Cotton has a good aesthetic image and is believed to be comfortable to wear (related to its ability to absorb moisture); but it has several performance drawbacks , notably the need for ironing unless it is resin treated, and its high flammability. Linen Linen is another natural fiber based on cellulose, although very different aesthetically from cot-ton. It is much more expensive to produce than cotton and does not perform as well . There are a large number of other natural fibers derived from cellulose, such as hemp, manilla and jute, but none of these has significant use in clothing. Although they are cheap, the handle is generally too harsh and unattractive for clothing; they are more suited to their use in ropes, carpets etc. Wool Wool is a natural fiber of animal origin. The qualities of different wools vary greatly.The merino sheep of australia,South American and South Africa produce very fine and soft wool.The quality of wool from these sources depends on the conditons and heritage of the sheep. Wool is attacked by hot sulphuric and decomposes completely. It is generally resistant to most other mineral acids of all strengths.
