Mass loss was used to evaluate the corrosion rate. The phase constituent and surface morphology of corrosion products were charac- terized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Experiment results showed that,with the addition of Mg, a flat plateau appeared on the polarization curves indicating passivation of the composites with Mg. While oxide scales consisted of Al O and SiO formed 2 3 2 on the composites, thereby enhanced the corrosion resistance of SiCp/Al composites in the above two test environments. It was revealed that the amount of harmful phase Al C could be reduced 4 3 with the addition of Mg, thus decreased the amount of Al (SO ) (OH) and of the corrosion prod-
