MMCN-Chapter4 Chapter 4 Network and Transport Layer Protocols for Multimedia Prof. Guohui Li School of Information System and Management National University of Defense Technology Spring 2010 Chapter 4 Issues about network and transport layer for multimedia communication networks Network layer: sets up routes from a source node to a destination node Transport layer: handles end-to-end issues between processes running on these nodes, such as reliability. Chapter 4 How do traditional network and transport layer protocols work? Why are they inappropriate for continuous data streams? What new protocols are there for multi-media transport where new principles are implemented. Chapter 4 4.1 Principles of traditional protocols 4.2 problems with traditional protocols 4.3 IPv6 4.4 Resource reservation protocol RSVP 4.5 Real-time transport protocol RTP 4.6 IP multicast (presentation) 4.7 Summary 4.1 Principles of traditional protocols Computer networks were initially designed to carry non-real time traffic e.g. Remote login, email, file transfer etc. therefore, the design decisions never consider-ed the bounds on delay and jitter issues. Now we check what the major functions and algorithms in the traditional network and transport are, why they are inappropriate for real-time data streams. 4.1.1 Routing Routing is the main task of the network layer. Routing actually involves: find an optimal path in the routing graph under changing network loads and network topology. get all incoming packets through a router at runtime in an optimal way. Two fundamental approaches to routing: path-finding algorithm is executed every time when a packet is injected into the network: datagram a path from source to destination is computed only once for the duration of a connection: virtual circuit 4.1.1 Routing Advantages of datagram are: efficiency of short connections (no connect and disconnect phases ) robustness (no state information in the nodes, no cleanup in the event of failure.)
