British Culture III -- Religion Britain has been shaped by turmoil between its nations, and tension between state and church. But centuries of conflict would forge the power at the heart of the largest empire the world has ever seen . Contents Religion Establishment of Church of England How religious are British today? Reference What is religion? The Jewish background: Jesus and his first followers were Jews. His teaching was based on the Hebrew Scriptures, and he sometimes referred to other traditional writings of Judaism. Christianity continued to use the Jewish scriptures (the Tanakh became their Old Testament) and accept such fundamental doctrines of Judaism as monotheism一神论, 一神教. He taught things about his identity and authority which they believed were incompatible with the Mosaic Law摩西律法, and the Jewish traditions of doctrine and the worship of God. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (John 5:18 (ESV) Later, the supreme religious and civic court of Jerusalem, at that time conspired to have Jesus put to death by the Roman authorities. Now the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death (Matthew 26:59 (ESV)). … But, after his death and resurrection, according to the New Testament, they formed a community, a church distinct from the Jews, into which they openly declared Jesus to be the Christ救世主(特指耶稣基督), and they began to be called Christians. Christians initially adopted the Greek translations of the Jewish scriptures, known as the Septuagint希腊文《旧约全书》 (相传公元前三世纪(270 年)七十二位犹太学者于亚历山大用七十二日译成, as their own Bible, and later also canonized the books of the New Testament. 基督教来源于犹太教,基督教从犹太教中脱胎而出,基督教有自己的新的经典,但基督教同样重视原有的经典。 Christian in Britain -- In 597 AD, St. Augustine, chosen by Pope Gregory I, led 40 monks as missionaries to England
