Passage 1 An interview is a conversation with a purpose. Its principal purpose is to provide evidence upon which the interviewer can make a prediction or judgment of a candidate’s suitability for the job. During an interview, the interviewer usually tries to draw out as much information about the candidate as possible. He may ask many questions designed to produce the most informative answers. He tries to avoid “yes or no” questions or leading questions which indicate the answer he is expecting. The second purpose of an interview is to provide the candidate with information about the job and the company and to give him a favorable impression of the company. Thus, the good candidate is encouraged to join and the rejected one leaves without any ill-feelings. On the part of the candidate, his career and interest may reveal his personality strengths and weaknesses. When a candidate talks about his career, he should try to make known his aspiration and ability. His interest may indicate whether he likes mixing with people or taking up leadership positions. How he energetically pursues his spare-time activities may also indicate his drive and determination. A candidate can make a revealing statement about himself out of a job. For example, if he says that he left his job because he was not appreciated, he may leave the impression on the interviewer that he is unable to get along well with his superiors or his colleagues.
