Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100039) AbstractTo improve the efficiency and security of transportation, highway monitoring system(HMS) is widely studied in developed countries. The key technologies in current HMS are described in this paper, including electromagnetism circuit detection, radar beam detection, image manipulation and computer vision. In the applications of HMS, however, these technologies have respective shortcomings. This paper puts forward a new design of HMS, which is based upon wireless sensors network. And the relative problems such as acquisition of vehicle speed, vehicle localization, detection of vehicle flow and so on, are investigated to construct a self-organizing and self-adaptive intelligent transportation network.
