Harmonising Rock Engineering and the Environment – Qian Zhou (eds) © 2012 Taylor Francis Group, London, ISBN 978-0-415-80444-8 Burgers rock creep around axisymmetric tunnels S.D. Athanasopoulos, P.P. Nomikos A.I. Sofianos Tunnelling Laboratory, School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, National Technical University, Athens, Greece ABSTRACT: The present paper deals with the time – dependent rock deformation during tunnelling, and more particularly, its association with the related phenomenon of creep in its viscoelastic form, as well as the numerical evaluation of it. Initially, a brief introduction of these two phenomena is provided. Then, the Burgers’ idealized model of rheological rock mass behaviour is presented and analysed, along with a short reference to the viscoelastic rock creep parameters. Afterwards, a quite extended description of the numerical models developed for this study, is made. The properties and parameters used for the numerical analyses, are given. Finally, the numerical results of the simulations performed are presented and discussed. Subject: Modelling and numerical methods Keywords : numerical modelling, weak rock, tunnelling 1 INTRODUCTION Squeezing in tunnelling may provoke various severe problems during construction, and therefore it is of high importance for tunnel design. The squeezing phenomenon is closely associated with the related phenomenon of creep, which is essentially a time – dependent behaviour of the rock mass. From the pioneering days of tunnelling in the Alps, where- from the term “squeezing rock” originates (Kovari 2000), there were many efforts to define squeezing and clarify all the substantial mechanisms that are related to it.
