Sun River Sea Department, Chongqing Jiao Tong University, Chongqing, China ABSTRACT: By summarizing the general principles of the diversion tunnel plug design at home and abroad, the plug design and stability evaluation method are studied. Based on the Jing-Jia-Ba Hydro-diversionTunnel Project, a three-dimensional finite element model is constructed for the diversion tunnel, and the seepage field and stress field are simulated by using ANSYS 10.0 software, the mechanical effects of the plug based on coupled fluid-solid theorem are analyzed. In general case, the plug is under pressure, and the tension and compression stresses of the plug are much smaller than the strength of plug concrete. The water pressure is assumed to be carried by the combination of the cohesion and friction on the contact surface of the plug and surrounding rock. The conventional plug design method is modified by considering the additional elastic resistance of the surrounding rock based on characteristics of force on the plug. The optimization of the design method can improve the stability against the sliding of the plug to some extent.
