They offer a most complete and realistic picture of English society of his age and remain the highest achievement in the 19th-century English novel. In nearly all his novels, behind the gloomy pictures of oppression and poverty, behind the loud humor and buffoonery(滑稽,诙谐), is his gentleness, his genial mirth, and his simple faith in mankind. Literary Works Literary Career Dickens’ literary creation can be divided into three periods: The First Period The Second Period The Third Period The First Period 1836 Sketches by Boz 《博兹随笔》 1837 The Pickwick Papers 《匹克威克外传》 1837-1838 Oliver Twist 《雾都孤儿》 1838-1839 Nicholas Nickleby 《尼古拉斯.尼科尔
