School of Stomatology uhan University, uhan 430079 [ Abstra t] Obje tive:The purp se f this study was t assess the preventive effects f 40% Chl rhexidine ( CHX) varnish n den- tal caries. Methods: 1250 children aged 3~ 7- year- ld fr m 3 kindergartens and ne sch l were assigned t a CHX varnish gr up, a Sandarach and a c ntr l gr up. In the CHX varnish gr up and in the Sandarach gr up, all children received a 40% CHX varnish applicati n and Sandarach varnish applicati n every 6 m nths respectively. The study was f ll wed up f r tw years. Re- sults:A statistically caries- reducing effect n dental caries in primary teeth and permanent teeth was f und in the CHX varnish gr up, the reducti n rate f dental caries was 45. 5% , 44. 80% and 40. 42% respectively in three age gr ups, c mpared t the data f the c ntr l gr up. There is n t significant difference between the Sandarach gr up and the c ntr l gr up (P 0. 05) . Con- lusions:Six- m nthly applicati n f 40% CHX varnish has caries- reducing effect n dental caries in primary teeth and perma- nent teeth.
