R. China) ABSTRACT In t he process of t he long- t erm hist orical development and art ificial select ion, t he Chinese Mudan has formed t hree larger cult ivar groups CG) . T hey are Zhongyuan cultivar g roup CG from Cent ral P lains of China) , Nort hwest cultivar g roup CG from Northw estern China) and Jiangnan cult ivar group CG from t he Low er Reaches of the Y angtze River of China) . Be- sides, there are st ill some smaller cult ivar g roups in Pengzhou of Sichuan P rovine, Y an an of Shaanx i Province, Baokang of Hubai Province et c. T he formation of each cult iv ar group has t hree w ays: by direct ly domestication and improvement of the w ild species ; by domest icat ion and cross- breeding of cultivars introduced from other parts of t he country; synt hesiz ing t he above mentioned t wo ways. M ost of t he cult ivar groups are of polyphylesis by the third w ay. T he w ild species relat ed closely to the culivated Mudan have been ident if ied basically. T hey are Dwarf M u- dan ( Paeonia s uf f r uticosa var . sp ontanea = P . sp ontanea, Yangshan M udan ( P . ostii ) and Purple- blotched Mudan P. rocki i) , etc. Depending on the records concerned and recent invest i- g at ion , t he relationship betw een w ild M udan and clut ivat ed Mudan at home and abroad has been summarized preliminarily.
