ASurveyof16RareEarthElementsintheMajorFoodsinChina

ObjectiveTheaimofthissurveywastoinvestigatethelevelofcontaminationofthemostconsumed
foodsinChinawith16rareearthelements(REEs),andtoprovidethebasicdataforestablishingand
revisingfoodsafetystandardsforREEs.
MethodsSixteenREEsinfoodsweremeasuredbyinductivelycoupledplasma-massspectrometry
(ICP-MS)inthelabsoftheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionoffourprovincesandtwo
municipalities,during2009-2010.
Results 1231sampleswereanalyzedand19121concentrationdataof16REEswerecollected.The
REEslevelsintheinvestigatedfoodsvariedsignificantly.Theconcentrationsofcerium(Ce),dysprosium
(Dy),yttrium(Y),lanthanum(La),andneodymium(Nd)wererelativelyhigh,whiletheremainingeleven
REEswereatlowlevels.Themeanvaluesoftotalrareearthelementoxides(REOs)incereals,fresh
vegetables,freshaquaticproducts,freshmeatsandeggsvariedfrom0.052mg/kgto0.337mg/kg.
Conclusion 16REEsinthemajorfoodswereatverylowcontaminationlevelsintheinvestigated
regions.
