They taught me the value of family, urged me to settle in town, nurtured the love of my children, and then they left. I am 31 years old, and a liberated woman, but it still hurts. Mainly, the balance they provided on a daily basis is missing — the balance between the past and the present, between my identity as a child and as a mother. That is all gone now.
