The Street Lawyer By Zhang Meijuan Introduction The Street Lawyer is a legal novel written by American author John Grisham. The book begins on the streets of Washington D.C., when the life of Michael Brock, a rich antitrust lawyer is turned upside down when a homeless man walks into his office at Drake Sweeney, a large law firm. The man, Devon Hardy, is angry because the firm evicted him from his home, along with some other squatters. After a near-life threatening incident inside the halls of Drake and Sweeney, with his marriage breaking up, Brock begins to re-evaluate his life. He decides that he can no longer work for the firm. In the process, he gets acquainted with life on the inner-city streets of D.C. He joins a firm that helps the homeless, including people that have been evicted by the law firm that he once worked for. Face-to-face with the homeless, Brock comes to realize the harshness of their existence. He vows to give them a voice in the courts against their oppressors - even his old firm, and find love and happiness again. the structure 激励事件(受劫持,劫持犯死在前)——冲突(内心冲突,对于公平和正义)——行动和进展纠葛(一个婴儿冻死在车里;从律师行辞职,为流浪汉打官司等)——高潮(、、、,偷档案出来复印,但遇车祸,未能还回去)——结局(赢得官司;赢得律师行的认同) Impression(1) The reason why this book is so popular is that it profoundly reveals the American society and deeply criticised the hypocrisy of U.S. law. For example, in Chapter 18, the author writes how the Unitied States makes the poor be getting poorer, and even eventually become criminals. Example The trend in urban America is to criminalize homelessness. The big cities have passed all sorts of laws designed to persecute those who live on the streets. Cant beg, cant sleep on a bench, cant camp under a bridge, cant store personal items in a public park, cant sit on a sidewalk, cant eat in public. They target the homeless. Some guy with a nice suit gets drunk in a bar and pees in an alley, no big deal. A homeless guy pees in the same alley, and hes arrested for urinati
