The Note of National Role Conception as Foreign Policy Motivation: The Psychological Bases of Chinese Diplomacy The development thread of this paper is that we will learn cultural norms which related to psychological bases, and we should explore national self-role conception until we conclude the Chinese typology which can be a useful tool to study Chinese foreign policy. Our point is the relationship between cultural norms and national role conception. First, we will discuss norms of asymmetric relationships. Asymmetric norms apply to diplomacy when China is viewed in an asymmetric leader-follower relationship. Such as Confucianism, a situation involving the superior-subordinate relationship in that the society is hierarchically structured. The notion of filial piety, nepotism and loyalty is subordinate to superior; in turn, the notion of ren, moral purity and leadership is the quality of superior. It is well arranged. And How we should do when this expected relationship is violate? In Confucian view, a violation of norm by the subordinate should be corrected by education of Ren. If the situation become more urgent and dangerous ,they will be to preserve self-image and opt for legalist sanction .The basic advocacy of legalism is to control through punishment and reward . In addition ,a Confucian superior may always adopt ren when he knows he can control the situation and he would be much better off by showing ren. It just like the situation of the tributary system, the interaction of China and Northeast Asia. For isolationism, one should isolate oneself from the decayed environment. It is not a negation of the present institution but a process where self-confidence in cultivating self-reevaluation and moral purification. All of these claims are mean for maintaining conformity to norms. So I think the peaceful coexistence and social society can trace back to these tradition.
