3.4 The Main Approaches to Leadership After studying this chapter,you should be able to: Contrast leadership and management. Explain different approaches to leadership, including Trait approach, Behavioural approach, Contingency approach, Situational approach and transformational approach Describe different characteristics of different leading approaches What Is Leading? What Is Leadership? What Is Leader? Key Leadership Functions The business agenda establishing direction; future vision; strategy development; leading change; achieving goals People development communicating vision and strategy; alignment of people; influencing people and teams Key Leadership Functions Doing motivating and inspiring others; energising people to overcome difficulties; striving to satisfy people’s needs Results produces positive and at time dramatic changes in an organisation Managers and Leaders Leaders Try to change organizations Have a vision of how the organization could be better and can inspire followers to pursue the vision Take risks Readily use power for influence instead of using punishment Play key roles when external environment is changing fast Managers Sustain and control organizations Follow an present vision Solve problems and bring order to the workplace while building commitment to organisational goals Take fewer risks than leaders Use available rewards, sanctions and motivation to get predictable behavior Play key roles in stable external environment Managers and Leaders Management may be required at the top, with leadership needed at lower level Some positions require only management, other positions require large amounts of leadership with little need for management, and others need a mixture of leadership and management An organisation needs leadership when the external environment is changing fast, and needs mangement when little is changing around it Managers and Leaders Organisations need strong leadership and strong management for optimum eff
