Ng Department of Mechanical Production Engineering, National University of Singapore, 10 Kent Ridge Crescent, Singapore, 0511 (Received 18 February 1994; revised version received 13 September 1994; accepted 15 November 1994) ABSTRACT The equations of motion of an annular plate subject to prescribed time- dependent radial compressive loads are formulated based on Hamilton’s principle and the assumed mode method. The effects of sinusoidal pertur- bations in respect of the radial loaak are then examined using Bolotin’s method. The respective regions of instability for asymmetric for- mations are determined by converting the resulting equations of motion to the standard form of a generalized eigenvalue problem.
