ThisstudytestedtheaccuracyofperceptionofJapaneseandChineseemotionsdisplayedfaciallyand／orbyvoice．
WecomparedJapnaese(n=21)nadChinese(n=19)participants’perceptionoffacial(visualonly(V0))，vocal
(auditoryonly(A0))，nadfacialandvocal(audiovisual(AV))emotions．Theexperimentpresentedparticipnats
withverbalmaterialsthatincludedoneemotionless(neutra1)andfiveemotional(happiness，nager，disgust，fear，
andsadness)facesandvoices．ThestimuliweretwoshortsentencesspokeninJapnaesebyfivenativeJapanese
professionalactorsand in Chineseby five nativeChinese professionalactors．The in—group advantagewas
confirmedintheAOpresentation，althoughnotintheVO nadAV presentations．Wediscussedtheseresultsmainly
from theviewpointofperceptualmodeandin-groupadvna tage．

Althoughthereareanumberofstudiesonrecognitionofemotion，mosthaveconcernedfacialexpression．
Numerousresearchershaveinvestigatedthecross．culturaluniversalityoffacialexpression(e．g．，Ekman，1968，
l972；Ekman& Friesen，1971：Izard，1971；Matsumoto，1992；Matsumoto，W allbott，& Scherer，1989；Russell，
1994；Wang，Hoosan，Lee，Meng，&Yang，2006)．Morerecently，thein-groupadvantageinfacialemotion
recognitionhasbeendiscussedasaculturalphenomenon(e．g．，Elfenbein& Ambady，2002a，2003；Kang&
