UTPT Dynamical Constraints in the Nonsymmetric Gravitational Theory J W Moat Department of Physics University of Toronto Toronto Ontario Canada MS A March Abstract The antisymmetric sector of the nonsymmetric gravitational theory NGT do es not p ossess a rigorous gauge invariance which allows redundant degrees of freedom in g [ ] to b e removed by gauge xing conditions Since there are in general six dynamical degrees of freedom in g [ ] we imp ose by means of Lagrange multiplier elds in the action a set of covariant constraints on the g [ ] The canonical Hamiltonian constraints in the weak eld approximation for the antisymmetric sector yield a Hamiltonian energy b ounded from b elow An analysis of the Cauchy evolution in terms of an expansion of the antisym metric sector ab out a symmetric Einstein background shows that arbitrarily small antisymmetric Cauchy data can lead to smo oth evolution Typ eset using REVT X E I INTRODUCTION Recently a mo died version of the NGT eld equations has b een published which leads to a linear approximation for weak elds that incorp orates Einsteins linear eld equa tions and the massive op en string KalbRamond eld equations for the antisymmetric eld g[ ] However Clayton has develop ed a Hamiltonian formalism for NGT that reveals a lo cal instability of the NGT eld equations asso ciated with three of the six p os sible propagating degrees of freedom in the skew sector Thus the three comp onents g[0i] ij of the six comp onent
