Octob er The Breakdown of Dynamic Scaling and Intermittency in a Cascade Mo del of Turbulence Omri Gat Itamar Pro caccia and Reuven Zeitak 4 9 t Department of Chemical Physics c O The Weizmann Institute of Scienc e R ehovot Israel 6 2 6 0 0 0 1 4 9 / n y d - o a h c Abstract We present an analytic and numerical analysis of the Gledzer OhkitaniYamada GOY cascade mo del for turbulence We concen trate on the dynamic correlations and demonstrate b oth numerically and analytically using resummed p erturbation theory that the cor relations do not follow a dynamic scaling ansatz The basic reason for this is the existence of a second quadratic invariant in addition to energy This implies the breakdown of the Kolmogorov typ e scaling law in a manner dierent from the conventional mechanisms prop osed for NavierStokes intermittency By mo difying the mo del equation so as to eliminate the spurious invariant we recover to go o d accuracy b oth dynamic scaling and the Kolmogorov exp onents We conclude that intermittency in the GOY mo del may b e attributed to the eects of the spurious invariant which do es not exist in the dimensional NavierStokes ow Intro duction A class of mo dels of hydro dynamic turbulence that has recently attracted some interest are the so called shell or GledzerOhkitaniYamada GOY mo dels These mo dels exhibit numerically a clear deviation from the exp ected scaling predicted by an application of Kolmogorov like dimensional analysis In
