ZHOUTianjun1,2 SONGFengfei1,3 CHENXiaolong1,3 1StateKeyLaboratoryofNumericalModelingforAtmosphericSciencesandGeophysicalFluidDynamics, InstituteofAtmosphericPhysics,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing,100029 2ClimateChangeResearchCenter,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100029 3GraduateUniversityofChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100049 2012-07-21 2013-02-03 InordertoassesstheperformanceoftwoversionsoftheIAP/LASGFlexibleGlobalOcean-Atmosphere- LandSystem(FGOALS)model,simulatedchangesinsurfaceairtemperature(SAT),fromnaturalandan thropogenicforcings,werecomparedtoobservationsfortheperiod1850-2005atglobal,hemispheric,conti nentalandregionalscales.TheglobalandhemisphericaveragesofSATandtheirlandandoceancomponents durinerewellreproducedbyFGOALS-g2,asevidencedbysignificantcorrelationcoefficients andsmallRMSEs.Thesignificantpositivecorrelationswerefirstlydeterminedbythewarmingtrends,and secondlybyinterdecadalfluctuations.TheabilitiesofthemodelstoreproduceinterdecadalSATvariations weredemonstratedbybothwaveletanalysisandsignificantpositivecorrelationsfordetrendeddata.The observedland-seathermalcontrastchangewaspoorlysimulated.ThemajorweaknessofFGOALS-s2was anexaggeratedwarmingresponsetoanthropogenicforcing,withthesimulationshowingresultsthatwere farremovedfromobservationspriortothe1950s.Theobservationsfeaturedwarmingtrends(1906-2005) of0.71,0.68and0.79℃ (100yr)1forglobal,NorthernandSouthernHemisphericaverages,whichwere overestimatedbyFGOALS-s2[1.42,1.52and1.13℃ (100yr)-1]butunderestimatedbyFGOALS-g2[0.69, 0.68and0.73℃ (100yr)-1].Thep
