Anonlinearstochasticsystemmodelisproposedto accountfortheNCSwithrandompacketdropoutandnetwork inducednon-uniformlydistributedtime-varyingdelayinbothfrom sensortocontroller(S/C)andfromcontrollertoactuator(C/A). BasedontheobtainedNCSmodel,employinganobserver-based faultdetectionfilterastheresidualgenerator,theaddressedfault detectionproblemisconvertedintoanauxiliarynonlinearH∞ controlproblem.Then,withthehelpofLyapunovfunctionalap proach,asufficientconditionforthedesiredfaultdetectionfilter isconstructedintermsofcertainlinearmatrixinequalities,which dependonnotonlythedelayintervalbutalsothedelayinterval occurrencerateandsuccessfulpacketcommunicationrate.Es pecially,atrade-offphenomenonbetweenthemaximumallowable delayboundandsuccessfuldatapackettransmissionrateisfound, whichistypicallyresultedfromthelimitedbandwidthofcommu nicationnetworks.Theeffectivenessoftheproposedmethodis demonstratedbyasimulationexample.
