Intercultural communication: seeking improvements 4.1 BASIC (the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Intercultural Competence) 4.2 Adapting to a new culture 4. 3 Summary of the whole course: the model of cross-cultural communication competence 4.1 BASIC (the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Intercultural Competence) … we conceive of intercultural communication competence as “the ability to effectively and appropriately execute communication behaviors to elicit a desired response in a specific environment.” This definition shows that competent persons must not only know how to interact effectively and appropriately with people and environment, but also know how to fulfill their own communication goals using this ability. (cited from Liu Fengxia, 2009: 187) BASIC (the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Intercultural Competence) (1) Display of Respect The ability to show respect and positive regard for another person. Respect is shown through both verbal and nonverbal symbols. Verbal ways include the use of titles, the absence of jargon, and an increased attention to politeness rituals. Nonverbal displays of respect include showing attentiveness through the position of the body, facial expression, and the use of eye contact in prescribed ways.
