Evaluation Summary General Assessment Solutions proposed by suppliers Cognos Business Objects Cognos proposed a single product ReportNet to meet all the requirements within the checklist i.e. reporting, analysis, portal, security, scheduling and administration. This single product positioning does simplify understanding. ReportNet is now a fairly stable product having been around in production since 2003 with large scale deployments. Business Object proposed three products: Business Objects Enterprise. A common deployment platform which includes portal, security, scheduling and administration. Crystal Reports. Primarily targeted at complex report authoring, viewing, running. Web Intelligence. Focused on ad-hoc query and analysis and simple report formatting. There are some overlaps between Web Intelligence and Crystal Reports and at times it is difficult to understand when to use which product. Whilst Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence are mature products within the Business Objects product line the integration of the two into a single common platform through Business Objects Enterprise was only released into production in Jan 2005 and has yet to be proven in large scale enterprises. Gartner positioning of suppliers Gartner’s positioning of both Business Objects and Cognos in the Enterprise Business Intelligence Suite (EBIS) market puts them both in the Leaders quadrant with Cognos slightly ahead. One of the key trends in the BI tool market place is the convergence of enterprise reporting and enterprise business intelligence suites (EBIS) i.e. the ability to provide ad-hoc query and analysis as well as large scale robust reporting through a single supplier and product.
