Phrasal Verbs and Idioms to wipe (something or someone) out 1) To kill a large number of people or animals e.g.: The current theory is that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a giant meteor that struck the earth. 2) To destroy something completely and not necessarily people or animals either e.g.: The typhoon wiped out the fishing village. IDIOM: (youre / (s)hes / theyre) etc (a) dinosaur(s) If you are a dinosaur, then you are old, outdated, obsolete and no longer useful or popular etc e.g.: 1 Wow, do you still listen to The Beatles ? Man, they are dinosaurs !!. BONUS IDIOM: the green eyed monster This means to be jealous or envious, since the color green is associated with jealousy e.g.: Any time a guy talks to my girlfriend, it really brings out the green-eyed monster in me. Note: another common phrase is ‘green with envy’ e.g.: Rob was green with envy when Bob got promotion. Word Power Different ways to say ‘wipe out’: Annihilate, destroy, devastate, exterminate These verbs are all very similar in meaning: they mean to damage, to remove, or kill somebody or something, so that they no longer exist. Destroy, devastate, and annihilate can be from a natural cause, although annihilate is usually connected with war, and to exterminate a species means to do so willfully and deliberately, so there are some subtle differences. Here are some examples: World War III would annihilate the human race. The Nazis exterminated six million Jews in the Holocaust. The city of Kobe was practically destroyed by the massive earthquake of 95. The huge tsunami of December 26 2004 devastated hundreds of thousands of homes and lives.
