BONUS IDIOM: a turf war Turf in its slang form refers to the territory that is held by a gang, and so a turf war is a battle between two gangs to protect their turf. Such trouble is usually caused by one gang believing that another gang has encroached on its turf e.g.: The mafia massacred three of the Irish gangsters since they were seen dealing on their turf.
