Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) Introduction to COCA: It was created by Mark Davies, Professor of Corpus Linguistics at Brigham Young University. 2. Period: 1990present. COCA was released in 2008 . 3. COCA is the largest corpus of American English currently available; 4.COCA is the only publicly-available corpus of American English to contain a wide array of texts from a number of genres. 5. The corpus is used by approximately 40,000 people each month, which may make it the most widely-used structured corpus currently available. 6. The corpus is updated once or twice a year. Because of its design, it is perhaps the only corpus of English that is suitable for looking at current, ongoing changes in the language. Content of COCA: The corpus contains more than 400 million words of text and is equally divided among spoken language, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, and academic texts. It includes 20 million words each year from 1990–2011.
