Literary knowledge: It is now admittedly believed that American literature begins with the first human perception of the American landscape expressed and preserved in language and the Native American tradition is now believed to be the foundation of American literature. The American Puritans, like their brothers back in England, were idealists. They believed that the Church should be restored to the “purity” of the first century Church as established by Jesus Christ Himself. They took it as their chief business to see man lived and thought and acted in a way which tended to the glory of God.
