The Development of English Novels English novels before the 18th-century The English novel did not mature until the 18th century. Before then, England’s chief literary achievements were in the fields of drama and poetry. The development of the English novel was strongly influenced by European novels. The English term “novel” came from the Italian word novella, which was applied by the Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio to the short, anecdotal prose narratives in his Decameron (1349). The modern European novel began after the Renaissance, with Cervantes’s Don Quixote. The modern English novel began two centuries later, in the 18th century. The rise and growth of the realistic novel is the most prominent achievement of 18th century English literature, which has given the world such novelists as Defoe, Swift, Richardson, Fielding. The Rise of the Novel in the 18th Century The novel became a dominant form of literature in 18th-century England because it allowed the writer a creative space that no other genres of literature could provide. Early English novels dramatized the rise of the bourgeoisie, and they had the middle class as the major audience. III.
