Chapter One Introduction Phonetics (语音学) is the science of speech sounds (语音). As we know, a language consists of three important elements (语言包括三大要素) ––– speech sounds (语音), vocabulary (词汇) and grammar. Speech sound is the material form (物质外壳) on which word and grammar rely for existence. 1.1 The Importance of Phonetics Study(语音学习的重要性) Divorced from(离开)speech sound, vocabulary and grammar are nonexistent (不存在的). So first we have to learn the phonemes (音位)or the basic sounds. English phonetics covers the articulation (发音动作)and the classification (组合) of the English speech sounds. It also deals with the laws of their changes, the rules of stresses (重音) and the intonation (语调) in English speech. In order to make oneself easily understood while expressing one’s own or other people’s thoughts in any language, This is proved by the well-known fact that the better we pronounce a foreign language, the more easily we understand it when we hear it.(只有自己发音正确才能听懂别人说外语） one must be able to pronounce sentences in that language quite correctly.
