Cognitive accounts of SLA SLA.ppt
Internal Factors Cognitive accounts of SLA 9.1 A general theoretical framework Five stages of acquisition 1) Apperceived (or noticed) input A passing through of the initial data, consisting of noticing features in the input (salient) and of the learner’s existing L2 knowledge 2) Comprehended input Not all apperceived input is comprehended or contribute to the learner’s understanding of message content. 3) Intake “A process which mediates between target language input and the learner’s internalized set of rules” (Chaudron 1985: 206). It doesn’t become part of the learner’s implicit knowledge until it has been “integrated”. 4) Integration Implicit knowledge: two types of implicit knowledge Formulaic knowledge consists of ready-made chunks of language. Rule-based knowledge implicit knowledge consists of generalized and abstract structures which have been internalized. Explicit knowledge refers to knowledge that is available to the learner as a conscious representation. Learners may make their knowledge explicit either in everyday language or with the help of specially learnt “technical” language. 9.2 Interlanguage theory 9.3 Implicit and explicit second language knowledge 9.4 Variability theories of second language acquisition 9.5 Functionalist theories of second language acquisition 9.6 The Nativization Model and Operating Principles 9.7 The Multidimensional Model and processing operations 9.8 Skill learning models of second language acquisition 9.2 Interlanguage theory 9.2.1 Definition of interlanguage Interlanguage is used to refer to both the internal system that a learner has constructed at a single point of time (an interlanguage) and to the series of interconnected systems that characterize the learner’s progress over time (interlanguage or the interlanguage continuum). (Selinker 1972) 9.2.2 Process of interlanguage construction 1) Interlanguage transfer 2) Transfer of training 3) Strategies of second language learning 4) Strategies of second language commu
