Abstract The surname is an important feature since a person born, taught from generation to generation, and affects our life in all aspects. Chinese surname culture has a long history and rich connotations, which developed with Chinese historical development. And China has complete genealogy information with clear relationship of space and time. They are rare and valuable materials for the study of Chinese history and culture. In this paper, the GIS technology and methods used in the study of Chinese surname history. With supporting of GIS technology, surname historical data, official historical data and other related literature are digital storage in geographic database, simulating evolutions of the surname through the spatial-temporal analysis and dynamic visualization. The study tries to help people for rooting and make a little contribution for family-tree GIS. The main research results are as follows: (1)Analysis of the spatial and temporal relationship of surname history with the GIS perspective, the paper address an events based Spatial-temporal data model of Chinese surname history. (2)Some methods of spatio-temporal data visualization were analyzed and compared in this paper, then put forward a three-axis cube model and design methods of surname dynamic visualization for describing surname history. (3)Parsed the surname historical data, constructed the database by the events based Spatial-temporal data model of Chinese surname history. Finally, designed and developed the prototype system.
