The AHC system is specially designed for load handling from a vessel or rig towards the seabed, underwater installations or other fixed targets on the seabed. The main winch drive system consists of up to 24 gears and motors connected to one or two gear rings bolted to the side of the winch drum. The gears are divided into an active and a passive side. The passive side balances the load. The active side positions the load. Together the passive side and the active side keep the load steady relative to the sea bed. The entire system consists of an accumulator cylinder, an air pressure vessel (APV) containing nitrogen, hydraulic pumps and motors (HPU), and a winch control system to control the different lifting modes and transitions between the modes. If the PL of the smaller pump is more than 500 psi lower than the larger pump, the smaller pump will fully stroke in reverse and then the cross-over relief will open and dump all the extra flow from the bigger pump across the reliefs. Things get hot in a hurry, and the small pump usually fails in a few minutes. You′ve got a different scenario. The most likely cause of this failure would be that the PL settings were ′pretty close′ together. Depending on the system plumbing, this can set up an instability between the two pumps′ PLs.
