Method to adjust frequency and length of dumbbells to nominal values G. Ciovati*, P. Kneisel*, J. Sekutowicz** *TJNAF, Newport News, VA, USA **DESY, Hamburg, Germany This note describes a method to fabricate cavities with the correct length and frequency by successive frequency and length measurements on the dumb-bells and mechanical trimming afterwards. A SNS ?=0.61 cavity is used as working example. Each half-cell is kept 50 mils longer at the equator than the nominal length as determined by Superfish calculations, whereas at the iris the half cells are trimmed to the nominal dimensions allowing for weld shrinkage. Then each pair is electron beam welded at the iris to form a “dumb-bell”. Finally the stiffening ring is welded on. Figure 1: Shape distortion due to the welding of the stiffening ring. The welding of the stiffening rings results in a deformation of the dumb-bells’ shape so that both frequency and length decrease. In a first step the length of the “as-welded” dumb-bell is measured. Frequency measurements on dumb-bells are done by “shorting” them with two aluminum plates; two small antennas, as schematically shown in Figure 2 are connected to a network analyzer. The applied torque to the dumb-bells should not deform the dumb-bell but should just keep it in contact with the plates. It is useful to carefully clean the surfaces in contact with methanol. The torque used to measure the dumb-bells for the SNS cavities is 20 lbs/inch. In that case the Q-value of the dumbbells in both the 0-mode and ?-mode are around 4500.
