Filter Theory of Mate Selection The Triangular Theory of Love (Sternberg) Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs and Love Mere Exposure Theory The more frequently the exposure to an object, the more favorable the attitude toward that object. Mere Exposure Theory Robert Zajonc (1968) demonstrated that the frequency of exposure to nonsense or unknown words would affect the view’s positive or negative rating of that word. The experiment was initially done with Turkish words and then with Chinese ideographs. In each case, the more an individual saw a particular word the favorable the rating the word would receive. The experiment was also conducted with facial photographs with the same results. Mere Exposure Theory Theodore Mita, Marshall Dermer, and Jeffrey Knight (1977) developed a rather unusual experiment: Individual test subjects and one friend were exposed to two photographic images of the test subject One mirror image and one true image. Mere Exposure Theory If mere exposure had an effect on positive or negative evaluation of the images, what would be the predicted results? The test subject preferred the mirror image of themselves. The friend preferred the true image. Mere Exposure Theory The findings from this Mere Exposure research has been employed by advertising efforts Proximity Research Proximity: the actual geographical location and physical distance influence relationships. Proximity Research James Bossard researched marriage licenses in 1932 Philadelphia He discovered that one-third of all marriage licenses issued in Philadelphia for couples who lived within 3 blocks of each other. 50% of all such licenses were issued to couples who lived within twenty blocks of each other.
