Reviews ABSTRACT Some possible new directions for the political science discipline are presented. Within the context of current, formal undergraduate education, political-science has two major functions: (1) to provide part of therequired general, social -- science education, and (2) to attract and prepixe future recruits for -the profession. These functions are referred to as old uses. The disciplines most common career is teaching; therefore, political scientist§ as professionals are best at reproducing themselves. The preilisefor new uses is that, in addition to contributing to the general education of college graduates and preparation of more teachers cif politial science, the discipline could make a major. contribution toward the preparation of professionals in the public -service.
