1/MA/4 Mathematics for Scientists This unit is intended for students taking degrees in subjects other than mathematics but for whom a reasonable level of mathematical competence is essential or desirable AIMS: To develop students skills in calculus and matrices, with an emphasis on the uses of mathematics in science and other numerate disciplines. OUTCOMES: At the end of the course students will: have acquired problem-solving skills; be able to solve certain classes of differential equations; be able to calculate using complex numbers; be able to solve simultaneous linear equations; be able to manipulate matrices. This unit is intended for students taking degrees in subjects other than mathematics but for whom a reasonable level of mathematical competence is essential or desirable. It covers a range of basic mathematical ideas and techniques likely to be needed in later service mathematics units and in applying mathematics to other science subjects. Topics covered include trigonometry, calculus, a brief introduction to differential equations, complex numbers, determinants and linear algebra. Most students will probably find that the course includes some revision of topics covered in their A-level courses as well as new material.
