Behavioural Psychology Terms:
Punishment: A stimulus that reduces the frequency of a target behaviour.
Example: Spanking a child who misbehaves.
Extinction: When a target behaviour stops because it is not rewarded (reinforced).
Example: Ignore a bully and he will stop teasing you. Attention was the reward, target behaviour was the bullying behaviour. Of course, having a third party intervene to monitor, label and punish bullying behaviour will also help resolve the situation.
Positive Reinforcement: A stimulus that is given following a target behaviour and results in an increase in that behaviour.
Example: Giving a child cookies only after he eats his/her dinner.
Negative Reinforcement: When a stimulus is taken away after a target behaviour is performed and results in an increase in that behaviour.
Example: Removing an electrical shock after a rat presses a button in its cage. Giving a teenager more freedom after they show maturity/responsibility.
Terms from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA):
(Professionals who use Behavioural Psychology in real-life situations)
Antecedent: An event, situation, or stimulus that precedes (comes before) a behaviour and can be used to predict that behaviour.
Behaviour: An action taken by an individual including language use. Something you can see, hear or feel that can be measured/documented.
Consequence: an event, situation, or stimulus that immediately follows a behaviour.
These terms are often referred to as the ABCs of a behaviour.
Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is a practical application of behavioural psychology widely used around the world. The basis of ABA intervention involves the manipulation of the ABCs and their relationship to each other.
