Interactions with Applications and other ETCs (from Jim Glimm) The goal of TSTT is to establish a usable and used adaptive terascale grid simulation technology and tool kit. Interaction with users is essential for both the creation and the validation of this technology. Strongly nonuniform features are a common feature of real applications. These features are often the most important part of the answer, and in this sense, they cannot be smoothed, or averaged away. Adaptive methods are thus widely needed and appreciated, but they are seldom used. The complexity of a customized adaptive solution is beyond all but the most ambitious application developer, a requirement compounded by the difficulties adaptivity adds to the task of load balanced parallel decomposition. Generic tools often do not mesh well with an existing application code. Thus interaction with a number of applications will be an essential step in the formulation of interfaces to data and adaptive grid components which will allow usability of tools. We will target six application areas and central issues within these areas. For each of these applications, we will assign a lead TSTT site and TSTT project leader to initiate one-on-one contact with the application team and to coordinate all TSTT technology delivery with that application. These one-on-one interactions will be our main method of interaction with our targeted applications. In addition, we will work with some 10 additional applications or with other aspects of the targeted applications, as a normal outgrowth of the extensive user interaction net work of the TSTT team. Much of the additional applications work will be leveraged, i.e. at no cost to the TSTT center, while still contributing to its goal of broad acceptance of TSTT technology and tools.
