Dep artment of Land Surveying and Geo-inf ormatics, The H ong ong Poly technic University , H ong ong, China Abstract:Topological relat ions have been a focus of research in many disciplines such as computer science, arti- ficial intelligence, cognitive science, linguistics, robotics and geographic informat ion science. Unfortunately, they have so far only been defined for and applicable to simple objects like single points, cont inuous lines and simple areas, not involving the design, definition, and description of topological relat ions operating on the complex objects. This article tries to make an effort to this gap and pays attent ion to the spatial areas w ith holes. Based upon the idea of space part ition and object decomposit ion, t opological components of an area ob- ject wit h holes are defined by the use of t he concept of neighborhood in the point set topology, which is a natu- ral extension of the definit ions for topological components of a simple area.
