When used as mortar thickening powder，bentonite has no component of lime and air-. So it can be used to replace the hydrous sulphate of lime used in blending mortar, which is totally different from traditional mortar. The mortar added this kind of thickening powder has high strength、anti-permeability and low systolic value and it suits all kinds of walling and painting mortar. In this paper, some conclusions are made through macroscopical contrastive tests. Contrasting to traditional mortar added the hydrous sulphate of lime, the degree of dividing layer of the constructive mortar, which is added the combined admixtures and bentonite, is obviously receded. Further more, early strength and strength of this new kind of mortar are higher than mortar added the hydrous sulphate of lime. But its adding value is only 20 per sent of the hydrous sulphate of lime, at the same time, the performance of waterproof and strength of felt are higher than traditional mortar. This paper intends to explore the microscopic mechanism of the interaction between bentonite and cement and the rules of the interaction with the method of macroscopic contrastive analysis and microcosmic XRD and SEM analysis. By such analysis, the paper intents to reveal the reason of strength and anti- penetrate improvement. That is the new thickening powder make the cement of mortar hydrate sufficiently and the construction close-grained. This new kind of mortar thickening powder can improve construction’s quality, accelerate the progress of the mortar’s commercial, at the same time it will have a great significant benefit not only in economical but in environmental protection.
