Abstract LargeareasofmuddysedimentsonthecoastalshelvesofChinaprovideimportantsamplesforstudyingclimateand
ecologicalchanges．Analysisofalargenumberofsuchsamples，whichisessentia1forsystematicsutdyonenvironmentalinforma．
tionrecordedinmudareasbecauseofcomplicatedsedimentaryenvironmentandvariablesedimentaryrate．requiresafastandeco—
nomicalmethod．Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedthepotentialofX—rayfluorescencecorescannerfXRFS)，afastanalytica¨nstrument
ofrmeasuringtheelementalconcentrationsofmuddysediments．andobservedasignificantcorrelationbetweentheelementconcen—
trationsofmuddysedimentsdeterminedbyregularX—rayfluorescencespectrometerfXI )andXRFS，respectively．Thecorrelations
aremainlydeterminedbyexcitationenergyofelements，butalsoinfluencedbysolubilityofelementions．Furthermore，wefounda
striking1inkbewteenAlconcentrationsandmarine．originatedorganiccarbon(MOC)．aproxyofmraineprimaryproductivity．This
indicatesthatMOCispartlycontrolledbysedimentarycharacteristics．Therefore．XRFSmethodhasagoodpotentia1infastanalysis
ofa1argenumberofmuddysedimentsamples．anditcanalsobeusedtocalibrateM0C inecologicalsutdyofcoastalseas．
