Earth Science Fr on- tiers , 2009, 16 3) :031-048 Abstract: The paper reviewed the hist ory and pro ress of research in accret ionary oro enesis, and considered the accret ionary oro enesis an import ant w ay of continental accretion throu hout the entire eart h hist ory. We supposed that the formation and evolution of oro enic belt could be explained by the evolution of composite arc- basin sy st ems in the active continental mar ins, and the formation of super oro enic system was closely relat ed to the composite arc-basin systems formed on one or t wo sides of an ocean, w hich w ere controlled by the sub- duction of lon -lived oceanic lithosphere. Accretionary oro enic sy st ems in the active cont inental mar ins w ere built up by a series of collision and accretionary oro enies, includin arc-arc and arc-continent collision, accre-
