This paper is a performance study of peer-to-peer systems over mobile ad hoc networks. We show that cross-layer approach performs better than separating the overlay from the access networks with the comparison of different settings for the peer-to-peer overlay and underlaying mobile ad hoc network. We then present a performance model which captures most facets of mobile peer-to-peer systems. We hope our results would potentially provide useful guidelines for mobile operators, value-added service providers and application developers to design and dimension mobile peer-to-peer systems.
