Introduction In the 1990s mobile telephony and data communications (notably Internet data communications) formed two of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy. This was in particular true in Sweden, and in recent years the convergence of the two – into Mobile Internet – has been expected to become the next major growth sector in Sweden (see e.g. Lindmark et al. 2004), driven by innovation in new products and services as well as improvements in existing ones. However, take-up of mobile data has been slow so far, at least in Sweden. Following the recent bust of the telecom sector, and the following downsizing of RD, concerns have been raised that the Swedish leading position in the telecommunication industry may not translate into a lead in the mobile communications industry. Instead, Sweden may have lost some of her global comparative advantage in the field and innovation capability and long-term growth potential may be in danger. This paper addresses these concerns by analyzing the dynamics of the now emerging mobile data communications sector in Sweden. Our aim is to map the emergence and dynamics of the sector, describe its current state and discuss what may help or hinder its further development.
