* * System Design: The transmission system consists of the transmission, the steering electronics, and the operating elements. Overall, only a push-button control switch, the accelerator pedal, the brake pedal, as well as maybe a display for transmission information (according to vehicle manufacturer) are necessary to operate the transmission. Controlling the retarder is usually implemented by means of the brake pedal. It can also be operated separately by means of a retarder lever (e.g. at the steering column). Communication with the vehicle’s systems is implemented via the CAN line. But the driver is in charge of shifting. The driver gives driving instructions via the push-button control switch, the accelerator and the brake pedal. The transmission follows the instructions and automatically engages the correct gear. The Ecomat transmission system can be installed variably in all bus concepts - sometimes extended by additional units. Be it a diesel or gas engine drive, be a transversally or longitudinally installed engine, be it standard or low-floor technology. * *Deviating designs of engine torques or bus tonnages require explicit consent by ZF. * The ratio of the 1st gear is the same in the 5- and 6-speed transmission (3.43). Because of the higher axle ratio of the 6-speed transmission (iA = 6.2) higher traction is made possible in the 1st gear compared to the 5-speed transmission (iA = 5.1). Thus the converter share is quit faster. Fuel savings and better acceleration are the result. If high acceleration is not necessary (according to the traffic situation) but respective traction available because of the axle ratio, the engine accelerates in the partial load area in a fuel-saving manner and low engine speeds. * In the countries marked with * sometimes more than 15 000 Ecomat transmissions are used.
