Iwasbornin theyear1632,in thecityofYorkinthenorthofEngland.MyfatherwasGerman,
but he came to live and work in England. Soon after that,he married my mother,who was
English.HerfamilynamewasRobinson,so,whenIwasborn,theycalledmeRobinson,afterher.
My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job
andlive aquiet,com-fortablelife. ButIdidnt wantthat.Iwantedadventureandanexcitinglife.
‘I want to be a sailor and go to sea,’I told my mother and father.Theywere very unhappyabout
this.
‘Please dont go,’my father said. ‘You wont be happy,you know. Sailors have a difficult and
dangerouslife.’Andbe-causeIlovedhim,andhewasunhappy,Itriedtoforgetaboutthesea.
ButIcouldntforget,andaboutayearlater,Isawafriendintown.Hisfatherhadaship,andmy
friendsaidtome,‘We’resailingtoLondontomorrow.Whydontyoucomewith us?’
Andso,onSeptember1st,1651,IwenttoHull,andthenextdaywesailedforLondon.
But,afewdayslater,therewasastrongwind.Theseawasroughanddangerous,andtheshipwent
upanddown,upanddown.Iwasveryill,andveryafraid.
‘Oh,Idontwanttodie!’Icried.‘Iwanttolive!IfIlive,Ill gohomeandnevergotoseaagain!’
Thenextdaythewinddropped,andtheseawasquietandbeautifulagain.
‘Well,Bob,’myfriendlaughed.‘Howdoyoufeelnow?Thewindwasnttoobad.’
‘What!’Icried.‘Itwasaterriblestorm.’
‘Oh,that wasnt a storm,’my friendanswered.‘Just a lit-tle wind.Forget it.Comeandhavea

After a few drinks with my friend,I felt better. I forgot about the dangerand decided not to go
home.Ididnt wantmyfriendsandfamilytolaughatme!
I stayedin Londonforsome time,but I still wantedto go to sea.So,whenthecaptainof a ship
