Lexical stylistic devices WEI XINGSHUN Simile: A direct comparison of two seemingly unlike things using am comparing words such as “like, as…as, and as…so” eg. “ a room without books is like a body without soul.” “ Red as a rose is she” As the ship is used for crossing the sea, so the camel is used for crossing the desert. To listen to the advice of a treacherous friend is like drinking poison from a golden cup. Some useful simile in English: as bitter as wormwood; as bold as brass; as happy as a cow; as old as the hill; as tall as the maypole; as cunning as a dead pig; as drunk as a mouse; as sly as a fox; as busy as a bee; as faithful as a dog; as proud as a peacock; as slow as a tortoise; as quiet as a lamb; as brave as a lion; as rigid as a stone; as light as a kite; as thick as porridge; as white as flour; as motionless as a statue; as sharp as a knife; as small as a pin’s head; as straight as an arrow; as light as feather; as hungry as a wolf; as thick as a wall; as black as a crow; quick as lighting; as different as apples and nuts. Metaphor- a figure of speech in which one thing is compared with another but the comparison is not formally expressed but remains understood. It does not, like the simile, state a resemblance between two things, but take it for granted that the two things are identical. “ The camel is the ship of the desert.” “All the world’s a stage” (Shakespeare) “The news was a dagger to his heart” “Life is a hard road.” English is full of half-recognized metaphors. We say, for instance: I can touch only the fringe of the subject. He was burning with zeal for the cause. English metaphor Vs. Chinese ones: It is regrettable that our appeal remained a dead letter.(石沉大海) I’ve got the devil of a toothache.(牙痛得要死) He lives a hell of a long way off.(远在天涯) It would make the deuce of a scandal.(这会弄的名声扫地) At a stone’s throw. (一箭之遥) To cry wine and sell vinegar.(挂羊头卖狗肉) To set a fox to keep one’s geese (引狼入
