Wellington Arch was built between 1826 and 1830 by Decimus Burton. The Arch originally stood almost directly opposite Apsley House, a short distance from its present place. In 1846 the Arch was selected as a suitable place for a statue of Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, soldier and Prime Minister. The statue sculpted (雕刻) by Matthew Cotes Wyatt was 8.5 m high. ①It was so enormous that it caused a fierce argument at that time. In March 1882，the Arch was moved a short distance to its present place in the center of a large traffic island to help carry out a road-widening plan. The statue of the Duke was removed to Aldershot at the same time and in 1912 was finally replaced by a huge bronze quadriga (青铜四马二轮战车) designed by Adrian Jones，who also sculpted the statue of the Duke of Cambridge in Whitehall. The Arch is empty inside，and until 1992 it was used as a police station in London. Its ownership handed over to English Heritage in 1999, it is now open to the public and contains three floors of exhibits detailing the history of the Arch and some of its uses.
