Canada Political system Team 9 Introduction Canada’s political system was greatly influenced by the two major foreign forces: Britain and America. Government: Federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. Canada’s system of government was based on the British system of parliamentary democracy, referred to as “Westminster-style” democracy. Introduction The Parliament of Canada: the House of Commons (下议院), and the Senate (参议院) Canada is a federation (联邦制)--- ten provinces and three territories, each with their own government, which have joined to form one country. The government of the whole country is referred to as the “federal government” (联邦政府). Monarchy The official head of state is the Queen, who is also the queen of other former British colonies. She symbolizes the nations unity but has no real power. the Queen is represented by an official called Governor General. the current Queen is the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II . The Executive The Prime Minister The?Prime?Minister?is?often?the?leader?of?the? majority?party?in?Parliament,?and?selects?the? ministers?who?make?up?the?Cabinet,?they?exercise?executive?power?as?the?“Government”, and are responsible only to the House of Commons. The Prime Ministers Office (PMO) is a key feature of the Canadian power structure and, over the years, the PMO has been seen as more and more powerful. Ministers generally come from one of the two chambers of the legislature and, if they are not already in the Commons or the Senate, they will quickly be elected or nominated respectively. the size of the Cabinet(内阁) is a matter for the Prime Minister and therefore fluctuates from the lower 20s to almost 40. Cabinet (内阁) a body of?ministers of the Crown?that, along with the?Canadian monarch, and within the tenets of the?Westminster system, forms the?government of Canada. Chaired by the?prime minister, the?Cabinet?is a committee of the?Queens Privy Council for Canada?and the senior echelon of the?Ministry,
